a person like a mastiff

From A Song of Ice and Fire: A Feast for the Crows:
He has a mocking name for everyone, thought Pate, but he could not deny that Marwyn looked more like a mastiff than a maester. As if he wants to bite you.

mas·tiff   [mas-tif, mah-stif]
noun
one of a breed of large, powerful, short-haired dogs having anapricot, fawn, or brindled coat.

At one point in the book, I think the maester who is like a mastiff was described as being angry – it’s hard to find an angry mastiff or one who wants to bite a person!
